308 S. Main St. C.B Johnson House

This Italianate style home was built in 1875 by C.B. Johnson, a prominent Middletown druggist and businessman. The hooded, arched windows and paired brackets on the roof cornice are common features of the Italianate style. Many of the interior and exterior changes to the home appear to have been made in the early 1900s, possibly following the flood of 1913. The most visible changes include “modernization” of the front porch to a Greek Revival style, and removal of a wall and fireplace which originally would have separated the front parlor from the entry way. The current owners, who purchased the home 20 years ago this year, have refinished the woodwork upstairs, recreated the faux marble finish on three fireplaces and renovated the upstairs bath. This fall they completely renovated the kitchen. An artist from the Middletown Arts Center will be sketching in the front parlor during the tour.
